Remember to keep personal back ups

So recently my Pixel 7 of about 2 years 8 months of use stopped working as though as it had ran out of battery. I thought it crashed randomly and that it would boot up as usual but this time it didn’t. I did the usual stuff like keeping the power button pressed for a few seconds, then plugged in the charger and nothing happened. I’m pretty sure the battery died out, I’ll see if I can get someone to repair it.

I didn’t think it was much of a big deal since electronics nowadays are not meant to last as long as everyone would like to. Planned obsolescence or misuse, I usually think that if you get out of your electronic device at least 3 years you’re “good”, 4 years awesome and 5 years means you’re lucky. This made me think that I’m not gonna get another flagship cellphone in a while, can’t believe this one failed suddenly without any previous warning signs.

New stuff, boring chores

When I got my new phone (currently a Samsung Fan Edition 25) I thought I would just have to log back in into my accounts and I would be running back smoothly and without any problems. I couldn’t be more wrong…

First thing I did was log in with my Google account which synchronized pretty much all of the usual stuff, but the more delicate and critical stuff was harder to get back into. My old phone was linked and secured to my bank account so I had to show up in person to a branch just to get back my password + 2FA codes.

…and then I noticed that I had lost access to the rest of my 2FA code apps, which kind of sucked because with those I lost access to some social media accounts, which although I don’t post frequently, I think my last post was around 7 years ago, I didn’t delete my accounts to keep up with my distant family in another country.

Things you should keep around

  • Always keep a copy, write down or print the most important passwords such as email, password manager and recovery codes.
  • Have a secondary device always, in my case my laptop saved me. I don’t know how like 99% of the people live just with their cellphone as a their primary and unique device.
  • As much as you shouldn’t delegate and avoid sharing your files to Big Tech, keep an HDD with things you’d like to keep like photos/videos.
